WHAT'S UP Tudo de Bom contines to play every Sunday at the Ethiopian Diamond restaurant. We're adding new tunes to our repertoire and I've written a new Ethiopian tinged tune in 5/4. I will be one of the featured composers at the May 18 Chicago Jazz Composers Collective concert. Currently I'm working on writing new material for that concert. See the schedule for more details. Tudo de Bom has a new myspace page, click the name to visit our site. The Chicago Jazz Composers Collective presented a special concert on April 27, 2008 featuring Jim Gailloreto's jazz string quartet. They performed new music comissioned by Chamber Music America. Also featured were CJCC artist-in-residence Dave Onderdonk with Larry Kohut. Compositionally 2007 has been a productive year for me. I will be presenting 3 premiere performances of new music with Tudo de Bom at the December 16 Chicago Jazz Composers Collective concert. See the schedule for details. On November 18, 2007 the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective celebrated 6 years of concerts at the Green Mill with a special anniversary concert. Featured was the wonderfully eclectic Dave Onderdonk performing his work in a duo with percussionist Geraldo de Oliviera. The second set was a sampler from various collective Artists-in-Residence and was a fun and diverse mix of styles. I premiered a new piece written especially for the anniversary concert. During our 6th year we presented 6 guest composers and were supported by 54 perfrorming musicians at our monthly concerts. September's Chicago Jazz Composers Collective concert featured an afternoon of big band jazz. Aaron McEvers' M13 and Ian Torres' Big Band kept the Green Mill jumpin'. The August 5th Chcicago Jazz Composers Collective concert was a musical success. We presented 10 compositions with various sized ensembles ranging from solo to Sextet. I premiered a new composition written for flute, flugelhorn, vibes, piano, bass and drums, inspired by Indian Ragas and the brain fog of early morning.
In June 2007 I premiered a new work with the collaborative group Tudo de Bom for the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective. I always enjoy working with fellow composer/musicians Juli Wood, Jeff Beer, Dan DeLorenzo and Mike Schlick. I'll be doing a set of original music at Morseland on May 14, 2007, check the schedule for more details. This is a fun quartet with Steve Ramsdell, Andre Beasley and Dan DeLorenzo. In this group we have concentrated on playing all original music. It's a challenge and also very rewarding. I'll be presenting a couple of brand new tunes at the gig. I have a new musician's page on MySpace, including a tune from an unfinished recording project. If you want to check out the tune, here's the link. www.myspace.com/kathykellyvibes March 2007 was spent working on a fun project with fellow CJCC composers Jeff Beer and Dave Onderdonk. We've been collaborating on a set of music along with Geof Bradfield, Dan DeLorenzo, and Andre Beaseley. It's great to share the composer duties with these guys. 2006 has been one of my most productive years for writing music. I now have a backlog of new tunes and have been working on developing them in different ensembles. I have arranged some of my tunes for a group called “Tudo de Bom” (it’s all good). It’s really a pleasure to work with saxophonist/composer, Juli Wood, trumpter/composer Jeff Beer, bassist Dan DeLorenzo and drummer Mike Schlick at various jazz venues. We're in the process of updating the web site and I hope to add new content periodically throughout the year. Hopefully I will be able to document some of my new tunes and make them available in 2007, so stay tuned. Also, a brief word about the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective, currently in the 6th year of presenting original jazz at the Green Mill in Chicago. Always interesting and inspiring, these concerts are a breath of fresh air. As artistic director I have enjoyed the opportunity to hear the diversity of music that so many wonderful Chicago jazz musicians are writing. Listings of upcoming Chicago Jazz Composers Collective concerts will be listed on the schedule section of this website.
